I finally got my green card after starting the process 3 years ago (most of the delay was because of a slight mistake of the part of my employee - a university - on the interpretation of how much experience I had and how much experience I was supposed to have to be an acceptable candidate for the job). Anyway, I filed the I-485 last February and received the green card last week. Meanwhile, the USCIS requested additional evidence twice, which probably delayed the decision by 1 to 2 months: first, they inquired on the legal status of my stay in the US - I came as a ph.d. student in 2000, requiring me to send copies of I-20s, I-94s, passport, visas, and a letter detailing dates and place of entry to and exit from the US; second, they requested evidence on bona fide marriage (we got married at the end of 2006), so I had to send our joint rent, insurances, credit card, and bank account contracts.
So this was my experience. Took some time, but it was successful. My advice for self-filing is that you send all of this together with the I-485 to avoid delays with these request for additional evidence.
By the way, I'm from Brazil and I'm an assistant professor in a state university.

Usually they ask for only copies of all the docs and not the originals.And they may ask to show the original copies of the birth,marriage etc,wedding pics,family pics etc at the time of interviews.

My wife came to US on L1. She got her H1 approved for this year and she resigned her L1 job. Now should we apply for H4 (dependent) since we have a few more months to go till her H1 kicks in or can she apply for an adjustment of status?

If you look at the other threads on this forum you have people against the Durban bill coz it affects F-1 students . There is another section which is against Grassley coz it'll affect Consultants trying to get H1-B. I do understand Grassley's bill can have many implications and need to be opposed, but the focus still has to be towards alleviating the Employment based GC issues.
I don't think CNN is to be faulted that much coz IV itself has lost its focus towards Employment Based Green Cards. period. thats what is started out to be and needs to come back on that track instead of trying to act as a platform for all Legal Immigration issues.
Simply put IV is " EB-1/2/3- related org" ok..ok.. add in those millionaires who put in a million dollars for GC too.
The point to be made is simple. Over last few months IV members, as an organization, with all it's diverse members and even more diverse immigration problems, in general have moved towards having an opinion and pushing an agenda in a direction which may affect H1-B, F1 visas and not directly EB Green cards.
It would be more prudent if the message sent across is simple-- rather than use the term generic term of legal immigrants - it should focus towards EB-Green cards, coz very few (other than the stuck )understand that H1-B is non-immigrant visa and try to club the whole GC + H1B issue together.
From CNN's point of view (and the whole world) the Legal immigrants are GC, H1, F1, B1, L1, etc .. the onus is on IV to clear that IV stands for EB based GCs. period. Use the term "Immigrant" wisely and sparsely.

Buying a house is treated more as an investment (so you are told by the mortgage brokers) and like any investment it has its ups and downs. The OP probably wanted to get into this down market to get a house at a far lower price that what it used to be 10 months back ( similar to buying stocks now if you want to play long ). I really don't see a point lambasting OP for that choice, it's an individual decision.
However, I also do believe that one has to weigh in their options before they plan to make an investment. If you are expecting a kid and your wife is planning on taking time off work to raise the kid, it's probably not a good idea to get such a huge loan on one's back since it's a well known fact, it's going to take some time before anyone see any +ve value on their house prices. It's also imperative in this market to have a decent cash reserve , in case there is no dual income to cover for expenses in case of a job loss. If someone didn't do it, no use crying now !

In my opinion, USCIS created this rule to disallow new applications such that they can deal with the countless backlogged apps for labor.
If the change of rule does not need congress action, then why not explore this option of allowing filing I485 during retrogression?

I am proposing a rally and hiring a lawyer to file a case. We group of people can hire Ron Gotcher or any other good lawyer to file a case. I am ready to give some money. But not to IV, as they have ignored all are comments and not done anything in recent months.
No rally, No public initiative.
